TrainWebs' GPS Project
http://www.trainweb.com/travelogues/viarail/GPS.html

The fun of locating places using GPS is growing every day. This is tunring into a pretty good sized hobby in itself. In addition, there are a number of people who are trainfans along with other hobbies, like Ham Radio. TrainWeb is going to offer folks like this an opportunity to share their interest with others and gain information as well.

TrainWeb is going to start a project using Global Positioning System (GPS) to locate all trian stations in the United States. This will take some time to do and will advance as information is gathered.

If you would like to help out in this effort, you can sign up by sending email to: gps@trainweb.com.

Basically we want to identify every train station that exists in the United States by using the GPS parameters to create WayPoints. These WayPoints will be listed along with the stations three-letter ID that is commonly used. The data we will provide will be the longitude, latitude, and elevation / altitude of the station.

With this information anyone with a GPS system can enter the information we will provide and they they will be able to program a path to get there or just use the information to know where a station is. You could also enter this information into your GPS unit and travel on the train and know how far away you are from any specific station.

This will be a fairly large project and your help would be appreciated. We would like your help in developing this database by submitting the required information to us so we can enter it into the database.

With this in mind, and so we can be pretty much uniform in locating stations the following guideline should be used in establishing any particular location definition.

TRAIN: When establishing a location definition, proceed to the safest location of the platform closer to the tracks from the station where passengers would load and unload. BUS: If the station is a Thruways station, go to the curb outside the station where the bus would pick up passengers. Once there establish the location and send the information to TrainWeb.

An additional option would be to send a picture of the station along with the data and this can be included in the database.

Now, just keep checking back to RailGPS.com to see the information grow.
