  Re: Train kept a rollin'

I took my two kids (10 and 8) on a train adventure a few weeks ago. It
started when I heard the plans to eliminate the Boston to Albany leg of
the Lake Shore Limited. I decided that I had better move if I wanted to
see that route. My original plan was to take the train to Chicago,
round trip over a weekend, but I suspected that the kids would burn out.
Instead we went from Boston to New York City, stayed overnight with a
friend, and the next morning, took the Maple Leaf from Penn Station to
Albany and then the Lake Shore Limited back to Boston. This kept
individual train rides to less than 5 hours and I knew that they could
handle that.

Now these -are- Eastern trains with Amfleet equipment, but they were
comfortable enough. The views along the Connecticut seacoast and Along
the Hudson were spectacular. The ride back to Boston through the
Berkshires was also very nice with the trees just beginning to change
color in the valleys. The kids thought that the train was super. My
daughter thought it was -great- to be able to choose between hot dog and
pizza instead of "white meal or brown" like on an airplane. My son
enjoyed just being able to walk a bit around the car. Both kids are
lobbying for another ride.

Leaving Pittsfield Ma. a car attendent informed us that the govt. had
found money to keep the trains running another 6 months so I am in thr
process of staging a trip this April on the Desert Wind so I can see
some Western scenery and ride some better equipment. ( You see the
-kids- really enjoy the train...)
