Each pair of seats can be turned very easily to face the opposite direction. To do so, pull out the above pin, push the foot pedle, turn the seats around, then re-insert the pin.
Above are the highest seat numbers in the coach car. Note that there are no seat numbers above the very last row of seats in the car just before the luggage rack and the door.
There seems to be only 6 seats per coach car without windows. This may be the location where luggage racks were placed upstairs in the Amtrak California Cars. In terms of passenger satisfaction, this seems to be one of the very few flaws that I was able to find in the new design. This flaw is partially mitigated if the seats are turned around to make up a set of seats for a party of four facing each other. Unfortunately, as can be seen above, one of the 6 seats in the car without its own window is the position designed to accommodate a wheelchair. The car is designed with a lot of glass and very few walls such that everyone can see outside the car from many windows besides just the one at their seat. However, I personally would not be very happy if the only seat available was one of the 6 without its own window.
