Amtrak City of New Orleans
Trip Highlights - Train #58 & #59
From Amtrak's 1996 Travel Planner
TrainWeb.com/routes/route_58/tp_58.htm
THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS is Amtrak's festival on wheels!
Must be something about the places it can take you: the raucous Dixieland
and Zydeco clubs of New Orleans... Memphis, Tennessee, the home of Beale
Street blues and Sun Records... Chicago's cool jazz scene and hot new
comedy clubs. There's also the Great American Pyramid and Festival Island
just north of Memphis (you'll see them from the train).
Then, of course, there's the City of New Orleans train itself: spacious,
bi-level Superliner cars with First Class sleeping accommodations,
comfortable Coach seating and a Sightseer Lounge with panoramic windows
for sweeping views of the mighty Mississippi -- and first-run movies at
night.
And in keeping with its character, the City of New Orleans' Dining Car
features genuine Cajun cookin', with menus developed by four-star
restaurants and cooked for you by Amtrak's specially-trained chefs.
So, if it's fun you're looking for, head for the City of New Orleans.
- Visit the Old South in a brand new Superliner complete with all the
amenities.
- Look for the capitol's gold dome as you ride through Jackson,
Mississippi. You'll want to visit the Governor's Mansion, the Dizzy
Dean Museum and the Mississippi Petrified Forests, too.
- Twenty-eight stately oak trees over two centuries old line the entrance
to the Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, Louisiana. This picturesque
sugar plantation is representative of the state's Creole era.
- Memphis, Tennessee, is not only the birthplace of the blues, it's the
home to the "King." Be sure to stop at Graceland, as well as the
spectacular Great American Pyramid near Festival Island.
- Blow over to Bourbon Street in New Orleans, where the music never stops.
After you've finished with the clubs, stop at Cafe du Monde for coffee
and beignets -- anytime of the day or night!
Scenic Highlights:
- Watching the Chicago skyline fade from view as you pick up
speed heading south.
- crossing the mighty Ohio River in Cairo (that's kay-roe),
Illinois
- spectacular views of the Great American Pyramid and Festival Island
north of Memphis, Tennessee
- and be sure to look for Memphis' Beale Street when you pull
into town.
- South of Memphis, you ride along imposing Mississippi River bluffs
overlooking the father of waters
- glide through vast groves of pecan trees in the Mississippi Delta country
- catch a view of the Mississippi state capital in Jackson
- then sweep around the shores of Lake Pontchartrain into
New Orleans
