Winter Wonderland on the Coast StarlightDecember 1996 - January 1997These are photographs of the first segment of my family's 1996 Winter Wonderland Rail Adventure. Because of the tremendous rain and flooding along the Pacific Coast and unusual snowfall and avalanche dangers in the northwest, this Winter Wonderland Rail Adventure had to be aborted in Seattle, Washington.
The Coast Starlight did go as far as Portland, Oregon and we were then bused to Seattle, Washington. No trains left from Seattle for days. We toured the city for a few days waiting for rail service to restart. Once it became obvious that it would be days or weeks before any train would be running from Seattle, we flew to Oakland, California. We spent a few days touring Jack London Square and San Francisco. We then took the Amtrak San Joaquins back to Los Angeles.
