ORANGE - Drive to the beach or the mall this weekend, and you'll likely battle crowded roads and packed parking lots along the way. Now it's even easier to beat the summer heat - and traffic - with expanded Metrolink weekend service.
Beginning Saturday, July 15, Metrolink will operate three trains each Saturday and two trains each Sunday on its Inland Empire-Orange County line between San Bernardino, Riverside and Oceanside, stopping at nine Orange County stations along the way.
This new service will double the number of weekend trains between Orange and Oceanside to six roundtrips on Saturdays and five on Sundays, making it even more convenient for Orange County residents to hop aboard and leave weekend traffic behind.
In early June, the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) began offering Metrolink commuter-rail service on Saturdays between Oceanside and Los Angeles. On July 2, the service became available on Sundays as well.
"We're excited that the public can take advantage of Orange County's expanded commuter-rail system," OCTA Chairman Art Brown said. "Weekend service is the first in a series of improvements to Metrolink planned during the next several years thanks to Measure M sales-tax funds."
Metrolink's diverse range of destinations offers something for everyone, and you never have to worry about finding a parking space. Catch a movie at the Irvine Spectrum, go antiquing in Old Towne Orange, explore historic San Juan Capistrano or enjoy a day at the beach in San Clemente.
Through Dec. 31, 2006, Metrolink weekend fares are 50 percent off the regular adult weekday fare. For example, a one-way trip from Orange to San Clemente costs just $4. Plus, up to three children age 5 or under ride free with each paid adult.
