An event announcing the upcoming launch of Amtrak's new Los Angeles - Las Vegas service, hosted by Wisconsin's Governor Tommy G. Thompson, Chairman of Amtrak's Board of Directors and George Warrington, Amtrak's President and Chief Executive Officer was held on Tuesday, December 14, 1999!

The announcement featured Nevada's Governor Kenny Guinn and U.S. Senator Harry Reid, who have been instrumental in making this service a reality. In addition, the custom-designed, European-style Talgo trainset that Amtrak will use for this service was on display.
The event was held near the Las Vegas Strip at the corner of Industrial Road and Hotel Rio Drive. The media portion of the public event occured from 12:00 p.m. - 12:45 p.m. after which the public was invited to tour the train until 2:00 p.m. In addition to the general public, attendees at the Governor's annual Conference on Tourism were also invited to the event.

I was on my way to Florida on the Amtrak Sunset Limited (see: www.trainweb.com/news/1999l05a.html) and was not able to attend this event. However, Ray Burns of TrainWeb was at this event to take photos and get the story.
