Amtrak City of New Orleans

The Amtrak City of New Orleans derailed between 9:45 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. (Central Standard Time)
on Monday evening, March 15, 1999, after it struck a flatbed tractor trailer truck loaded with
steel that was blocking a railroad crossing about 50 miles south of Chicago.
"The engineer said he saw the lights flashing, he saw the barriers down, and then he saw
the truck stop and try to get around it,"
said Amtrak's Chairman, Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson.

Whenever there is a major news item regarding Amtrak, TrainWeb will attempt to either post
information about the event or provide links to others web pages that cover the event. However,
please be aware that most online news outlets remove pages about current news within days
after the event. Thus, if you attempt to use the below links more than a few days after the
event, the links might no longer work. Most newspapers move their current stories into an
online database after a few days. In most cases you can search their database online using
the date or topic of the article, but will often have to pay to retrieve the article.
