TrainWeb has a part-time opening of about 20 hours per week for one person in our office above the Amtrak Station in the Santa Fe Depot in Fullerton, California. The hours are flexible but need to be sometime between 9 A.M. and 5 P.M., Monday through Friday, initially.
This would be an ideal position for a local college student who wants to obtain a variety of business and computer experiences. There are three main aspects of this position: (1) To implement various web related pages and projects that we have pending, (2) To help our rail web clients and non-profit rail organizations and other individuals hosting rail web sites at TrainWeb with any web questions they may have, and (3) To co-ordinate by e-mail and phone the efforts of people around the nation who have volunteered to help with TrainWeb's involvement in providing services to the non-profit sector of the rail community (rail history, museums, advocacy, safety, photo archives, etc.).
We do understand that your technical knowledge of web and internet issues may be limited at first. Thus, time and resources will be provided to research the information needed to do the above tasks. TrainWeb has an extensive library of books and CD-ROMs related to the Web and Perl CGI programming and will not hesitate to acquire additional resources that may be helpful.
Since we are a small business and there are just two of us in the office, Ray and Steve, we wear many hats. Your work here may also entail other tasks. We all do what needs to get done at the time, regardless of whether it fits nicely into our job description or not. For a part-time college student, this may provide an ideal diversity of first time business experience!
We do require that applicants have at least some experience designing web pages, even if it is just your own home page on the internet. Experience with any web design tool is acceptable, but if Microsoft Front Page is all you have ever used, then applicant must be willing to switch to any other web design tool of their choice. As far as we know, Microsoft Front Page is the only web design tool that generates web pages that violate the HTML industry standard. TrainWeb prefers to build web pages that are compatible with all web servers.
If you don't already know Perl CGI programming, you will probably learn it on the job and will be given time to learn many other advanced web programming and design techniques. You may have a chance to learn and work with the Apache Web Server on commercial BSD or Linux Unix. Experience using software on MS Windows 95 or 98 systems is important.
As mentioned above, this would be an ideal part-time transition job for a college student. We can work the hours around your class schedule and may be able to provide additional hours of work during college breaks if desired. Although we need your hours to be between 9 A.M. and 5 P.M. Monday through Friday initially, we might be able to let you work some of your time outside of these hours or on weekends once you are familiar with our operation. That may help you to fit this job around your class schedule. An interest and understanding of rail related hobbies and issues is desireable, but not necessary.
