The Million Mile Rail Man Rides Again: Rails to Recovery
www.trainweb.com/depotinn/chris2.html
On Apr. 27, 2007, when Chris Guenzler steps down from the Amtrak Southwest Chief in LaPlata, MO he will become the only known person to have accomplished a million miles of rail travel as a rail passenger in America in modern times. His trip will begin in Fullerton, CA Apr 25, with a departure party, continue with an onboard millionth-mile celebration, and conclude with an arrival media reception in LaPlata, MO. This will be followed on Sat. Apr 28th by a live broadcast on the "Lets Talk Trains" worldwide internet radio talk show at the Depot Inn & Suites hotel between Noon and 3PM CDT.
Chris is a recovering alcoholic and he has successfully achieved and maintained sobriety through his love of the railroad and railroad travel. His story, the "Rocky Rails to Sobriety" is available at www.trainweb.org/chris/Sobriety.html. He has traveled via rail in every state in the nation, including all Amtrak routes and almost all tourist railways, Canada's VIA Rail routes, and many routes of interurban rail. His photos and travelogues can be viewed at www.trainweb.org/chris.
The Amtrak route between Fullerton, California, and La Plata, Missouri, was selected for this 1,000,000th rail mile event as these two towns are integral to the rail ventures of Chris Guenzler and TrainWeb.com. Chris has been posting his rail travelogues for many years at TrainWeb which had been located upstairs from the Amtrak Ticket Office in the Fullerton Depot for ten years. Recently, TrainWeb has moved to La Plata, Missouri, where it is heavily involved with the expansion of the Depot Inn & Suites into the Rail Resort, a future Valhalla for train enthusiasts. TrainWeb has also been integrally involved in the planning of future rail museums in both Fullerton and La Plata. Hence, it seemed only appropriate that Chris should achieve his 1,000,000th rail mile while traveling between these two rail towns.
