Amtrak Superliner II Engines

Amtrak has over 400 passenger locamotives. The most common used to be the F40PH ("P" for "Passenger" and "H" for "Head end power" - provides electrical power to the rest of the train). These locomotives provide up to 3,000 horsepower each, but almost all are retired.

A newer locomotive is the AMD-103, which is more commonly known as the P40. They look more modern than the F40s and can be considered the best or worst looking locamotive ever, depending on your own opinion and perspective. The P40 is capable of generating 4,000 horsepower. Thus, just 2 of these engines can pull a train that might have previously required 3 of the F40s! The P40 can generate enough electrical power for 700 homes.

On the eastcoast, Amtrak uses a pure electric locomotive called the AEM-7 which has 7,000 horsepower!

You might also encounter trains pulled by the P32 which was put into service in 1992. They are often used on trains coming out of Los Angeles.
